Introduction

India is a major South Asian destination for culture, business and medical travel. Main gateways include Delhi (DEL), Mumbai (BOM), Bengaluru (BLR) and Chennai (MAA). India runs a broad e‑Visa program alongside consular visas for some nationalities.

Tourist

Apply online for an e‑Tourist Visa with a passport valid at least 6 months, a digital photo and proof of onward/return travel. Common options include a 30‑day single‑entry eTV and longer 1‑year or 5‑year multiple‑entry e‑Tourist visas (with stay limits per visit). Fees vary by nationality. e‑Tourist visas are generally not extendable in-country.

Business

Short visits for meetings and conferences require a Business visa, typically supported by an invitation letter and company documents; multiple‑entry validity up to 1 year is common. Any paid employment requires an Employment visa and registration with FRRO/FRO after arrival.

Student

Obtain an admission letter and demonstrate funds, then apply via an Indian mission. On arrival, complete FRRO/FRO registration; the visa is usually valid for the duration of studies.

Retirement/Long‑stay: There is no general retirement visa. Long stays are possible through Entry (X) visas for eligible dependents/persons of Indian origin, or OCI status where applicable.
